Born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, Charles Sydney Hopkinson was a highly successful portrait painter with such clients as President Calvin Coolidge, and Mr. and Mrs. John D. Rockefeller, Jr.  A graduate of Harvard, Hopkinson studied at the Art Students League in New York and at the Académie Julian in Paris.  Through his Harvard connection, he completed forty-five portraits of Harvard presidents.  In addition to his many commissions, Hopkinson enjoyed painting portraits of those closest to him, especially his five daughters.  The present work is his eldest daughter, Harriot, nicknamed Happy.
